Lambing School
This page is just a summary, you can read the full details in our
We have always been adamant that we produce the very best meat here at Kirkwood, but now is your chance to see for yourself how it’s done!
Our Lambing school will give participants the opportunity to learn so many diverse skills; a real back to basics school. You will experience first hand lambs being born in our fields, which medicines/veterinary techniques we use & how to look after orphan lambs. (Those who are squeamish please be warned, blood and death are sadly inevitable during lambing).
The next part of the school will be to learn about shearing. How to get the fleece from the sheep so that we can then use it for clothes etc. Weaving/spinning the fleeces will also be demonstrated during the course of the school, so you will get a step by step tuition on how we make use of the wool from our sheep.
The final stage of the school will demonstrate how we make the best of the final product of our lambs – their meat. A butchery demonstration on the carcass of one of our hoggets (lambs over 1 year old) will illustrate the different cuts and how to prepare the meat. We will also share some techniques/reasoning surrounding the age of the animal, their condition/habitat and how these all add to the taste and quality of their meat.
Based at Kirkwood, your accommodation will be in one of our holiday cottages situated in the Stables Courtyard. You will have your own bedroom but may share a cottage with a fellow student. All meals (breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal) are included in the price, as is the accommodation, guidance and tuition. The price for all this is just £690.
