There are some excellent courses in the area and green fees are cheap and readily available. We are very lucky to have Lockerbie Golf Club &
Lochmaben Golf Club just 5 minutes away.
On the stunning Solway Coast just 10 minutes from us we have Powfoot Golf Club. Hoddom Golf Club (9 hole) is also very local. And why not try some more – Moffat Golf Club and Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club aren’t too far away as well as Dumfries and County Club, Southerness Golf Club or Thornhill Golf Club.
There is sailing at Castle Loch, Lochmaben, around 4 miles from Kirkwood. The Galloway Activity Centre at Loch Ken near Castle Douglas has sailing, wind-surfing, canoeing and rowing boats. Water skiing at Loch Ken Water Ski & Wakeboard School is also very popular.
If you’re into walking, the Moffat Hills are a must. The scenery is breathtaking around the Gray Mair’s Tail & the Devil’s Beeftub. The climbs range from moderate to challenging & there is even a waterfall!
The Solway Coast is just a 45 minute drive away, visitors can reach great sandy beaches at Sandyhills, Rockcliffe and Southerness.
Threave at Castle Douglas is among many outstanding gardens in the area open to the public. Crichton Gardens are not as extensive as Threave, but impressive to look at. Further afield, Castle Kennedy Gardens near Stranraer, are well worth a visit.
There are a few local establishments that cater for riders of all ages and abilities. Try Brig House Bay for trekking, or Barend, & Chariots of Fire for something a bit different – carriage driving! This is beautiful country for riding. Some even offer livery.
